WPI Builds First 'Rooftop Field' in Massachusetts Atop New Parking Garage!
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) needed a green facility constructed to meet its increased parking needs while also meeting a tight schedule and budget requirements. To achieve this goal, Symmes Maini & McKee Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts, the project’s architect and engineer, created a one-level, 171,696-square-foot building using a total-precast concrete structural system and architectural precast concrete walls. Gilbane Building Company of Boston, Massachusetts was the projects general contractor.
Unique in Design
The unique WPI Athletic Field Parking Deck is a 548 parking space structure supporting a rooftop athletic field (with a footprint of 267'-0" x 642'-4") used for softball, soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, and a variety of other recreational activities.
The parking structure features precast concrete double tees, single tees, girders, columns, shear walls, stairs, slabs, wall panels and spandrels, which were manufactured and erected by Blakeslee Prestress, Inc. The precast concrete exterior spandrel façade was finished in a tri-colored thin brick design.
The parking structure deck (rooftop field) consists of three corner stair towers and one elevator / stair tower which connects to an existing school building located across the street.
